February 16, 2006
Facility Tour at Calspan

February, Niagara Frontier Chapter Vibration Institute,
Tours Calspan Transonic Wind Tunnel Tour

As part of the February monthly meeting, members of the Niagara Frontier chapter toured the
Calspan Transonic Wind Tunnel (TWT), the largest independent test facility of its kind in the
USA.  Operating at its Genesee Street location (across from the Buffalo-Niagara International
Airport) since 1947, the Tunnel has accumulated more than 140,000 hours of automotive and
aerospace testing.

Larry Tworek, Senior Aeronautical Engineer, led a tour of the continuous flow, variable density, closed circuit facility, which is designed with an eight square foot test section. With a maximum Mach number of 1.35, the tunnel may be operated at stagnation pressures ranging from 0.25 to 3.25 atmospheres. Test conditions are set via independent control of Mach number and one other pressure-dependent variable for constant Reynolds number, static pressure, dynamic pressure, or total pressure operations. Shock attenuation and de-blocking to achieve transonic speeds in the TWT is accomplished through uniformly perforated test section boundaries, a concept originated and developed at Calspan.

During the one-hour tour, VI members and guests walked through a pictorial timeline of various testing applications, followed by a tour of the control room, and observation of some aircraft wing tests in progress.  Of anecdotal interest was that US Ski Team had recently used the facility for wind practice before the Olympic games, as well as Larry's note that Calspan has their own Niagara Mohawk power substation, to handle the massive energy testing requirements.

The February meeting was sponsored by Larson Davis, sister company to PCB Piezotronics.  For
